SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (KGPE) – Imagine checking your bank account and noticing nearly $ 5,000 wrongly withdrawn.

It happened to a man in Shaver Lake.

His debit card was not stolen.

His bank account was not hacked.

It was his insurance company that withdrew the money without any explanation.

He got his money back, but had to wait weeks.

He was running, so he came to CBS47 On Your Side.

We made a few phone calls and a check was mailed.

But it has still not been explained why $ 4,492 was withdrawn.

Jeffrey Smith is retired and has a fixed income.

So waking up to find $ 4,492 missing from her bank account was alarming.

“No explanation at all,” Smith said.

The recipient was his insurance company Blue Shield.

Smith had no hospital bills or surgery to pay.

There was no explanation as to why this amount was withdrawn.

“I’m sure a lot of people can’t afford that, even for 14 days, and have bouncing checks and everything,” Smith said.

Smith’s monthly insurance payment is $ 141.

This is the amount he expected to see withdrawn.

Instead, it was 31 times more.

“The number of course doesn’t make sense, it’s 31 months old, so I don’t understand it at all.”

He immediately started calling Blue Shield.

“I was on hold for about an hour and a half every day for 13 days.”

When he wasn’t going anywhere, he wrote CBS47 On Your Side asking for help.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it back and I don’t think I would have got it if you hadn’t intervened.

We reached out to Blue Shield to inquire about Smith’s case.

We were given this statement:

Blue Shield of California takes all perceived billing issues very seriously and strives to thoroughly investigate and resolve any issues. “

The problem is, while they were investigating, Smith still didn’t have his money, and his insurance policy was frozen for almost two weeks.

“It didn’t make sense and if they had that kind of money that they took from me, I should at least have been insured while they investigated,” Smith said.

He had to pay hundreds of his own prescriptions.

“I went to get my meds from CVS and they said it wasn’t covered so I had to pay full price,” Smith said.

The day after our interview with a representative from Blue Shield, a check was mailed, returning Smith’s money.

Smith says this should be a learning lesson for everyone, that the money in your bank might not be as secure as you think.

“The bank even mentioned that it certainly would have been a red flag if it would have been a personal matter, but with Blue Shield they didn’t think twice.

We asked Blue Shield if they would reimburse Smith for the drugs he paid out of pocket.

They declined to comment further than the statement already provided above.
