Tyrann Mathieu apologizes for social media explosion targeting Chiefs fans

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu has apologized to fans for his social media outburst, in which he called Chiefs supporters spoiled.

Chefs fans are rightly upset by the defense for their inability to make systematic saves, and Mathieu has had enough. Kansas City has played in two of the last three Super Bowls and three consecutive AFC championship games. It’s not like they haven’t had their fair share of success.

Still, calling Kansas City sports fans “toxic” seems a bit of a stretch.

“I didn’t have the season I wanted to have, and as a team, I think we can say the same thing,” said Mathieu. “Frustration tends to build up. Obviously, the people who really know me – the teammates, the people I deal with in the community, even the fans I meet at the gas station – I think these people can see me as a genuine person. Obviously, I shouldn’t have used those word choices. I can’t wait to play better and do better and especially not to be a distraction for my teammates.

Chiefs: Tyrann Mathieu in contract year

No wonder Mathieu is frustrated, he has not signed a long term contract and he is in the last year of his contract. At 29, this could be his last chance for a significant salary, especially since he turns 30 next season.

Mathieu even admitted that he needs to change his social media tactics in the future and not engage with fans. It is a disaster that awaits.

“It’s one of the things I would love to grow up in,” he said. “Obviously I have to do a better job of dealing with negativity. There is a time and a place for everything.

Growth is part of all of us. One way or another, Mathieu has learned his lesson.
